Key Details

To solve this online retailer’s massive storage needs for 14,000 employees, we deployed one mighty locker system. For their second HQ—a 2.1 million square foot campus—we supplied 18,000 individual locked cubbies. We built in adaptive fits for our lockers, so they installed snugly across 44 floors, including in corners and alcoves.

Precision-manufactured from top materials, our versatile lockers offer a bespoke look, without added cost or lead time. We collaborated with Gensler, the project’s design firm, to select finishings that match the design vision: a mix of bright colors, sharp white, and sleek wood veneer.

In the final walkthrough, surveying every floor, HPL founder and CEO Frank Stratiotis signed off with the result we’re always aiming for: no-punch perfection.

Honing our locker system across dozens of jobs

Our lockers first caught this online retailer’s eye in 2017 and we were invited to bid on their San Francisco office.  Competing against the biggest contract furniture makers in the U.S., HPL won out because, quite simply, we offered a superior product at a lower price.

The success of that first job catapulted a massive-scale standard locker system. In five years, we produced 50,000+ lockers for dozens of locations in North America. Because we created a precision standard system, all made in-house with automated best-in-industry machinery, we could accommodate rapid expansion without compromising quality. We brought this capacity to our client’s new headquarters, providing 14,000 employees with a beautiful place to put their belongings.

Manufacturing is an inside job at every step

We admit it: we’re control freaks. We manufacture everything ourselves—in our own-state-of-the-art facility—so we can control quality from end to end. For our lockers, we use thicker material than the industry standard for a more durable product. With our automated best-in-industry machinery, we standardize and perfectly machine every part—down to the hinge hardware drill holes.

For the most advanced locking system, we partnered with Gantner, a leader in RFID technology. We bring this commitment to best practices to every edge and seam: instead of edge-banding locker doors with messy glue like many manufacturers, we use a hot-air process to seal a polished look. We can’t let go of the results: custom-made quality at scale.

“For our competitors, lockers are just a box. And their manufacturing is often farmed out to different locations. For us, lockers are a piece of furniture. And we manufacture everything end-to-end in house. This means, our lockers win on price, quality, and lead time, every time”

- Frank Stratiotis, CEO

Perfecting details to lock in clean lines

We believe functionality should come in a beautiful package. For example, when installing our locker’s control panel, we didn’t just slap it onto the front. Instead, we machined a palm-sized nook for the equipment. With a slim .25” reveal, the control panel tucks neatly into the locker’s streamlined design.

Our detail-obsessed approach also applies to our wood finishes: we carefully aligned the grain across storage units for a clean, unified look. Together, all these are the details that elevate our lockers from practical storage to upscale furniture.

Install-friendly lockers

We built this locker system to adapt to the inevitable variability of office spaces. Our lockers can fit corners, line walls, or be freestanding. To maximize space in a tight employee locker room, we took advantage of all three options. With this u-shaped configuration, lockers fit into corners and hug three walls, encircling a freestanding double-sided locker bank. To top it off, we designed corner-support caps, laminated to match the lockers, cinching everything together into one unified whole. Details like these reinforce the custom millwork look.

One system: a multitude of looks

Working with different architectural firms across our client’s many locations, our lockers also needed to support a range of unique aesthetics. So, we developed a system that plays well with many design visions—from dark wood laminates, to plywood, to brightly colored Formica, we can easily customize the finishes for each project.

Meanwhile, the lock technology, sizing, charging capabilities, and overall material quality are consistent for every locker. This is another boon of making everything in-house: we can easily customize our standard offering for a distinct look and still scale up production without delay.
